The Grachen Family
After my divorce I was sure that I would find Mr. Right, get married and have many children. That was not in God’s plans. At least, not the way I envisioned it.
I soon found myself at the age of forty, single and child less. At that point I started seeking and found Mr. Right. Not who you would think, but Jesus, my Lord and Saviour. As I was getting closer to Jesus he pointed me in the direction of International Adoption. Psalm 37:4 says “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Having babies was a great desire of my heart. For that reason I decided to look into the Chinese adoption program. In that program, I, as a single woman, could adopt a baby girl from China.
In 1997, I started the adoption process which took 18 months and about $20,000. It is expensive to adopt a child internationally but they are worth so much more than that. In 1998 I flew to China to adopt Hannah who is now a Senior in High School and very much the desire of my heart. After enjoying Hannah for six months I prayed about the decision to get a sister for Hannah. God gave me a resounding “yes” and in 2000 I traveled back to China to receive a bundle of joy and a doubling in my heart’s desire. God is good! Hannah and Gabriela are my pride and joy and I never think of them as anything other than my daughters.
The whole adoption process is like labor and once you see their first picture you are madly in love. I chose adoption over any other means of having a child because I felt that two people would benefit from the process. In reality, I was wrong, two countries, two communities, two families have benefited from the adoption of each of my children. My girls do love their native country and just might go do some work there in the future. I believe they are special young ladies that have given our family lots of joy and I can only think that their birth mothers can only guess and hope that they are in a better place and have been given better opportunities than they would have been able to provide. All in all, adoption is a beautiful thing. It is a way to make the world a better place.
